Trendy colors for spring 2012 and their significance – part 2

28 Dec 2011

In our last post, we started talking about the trendiest colors of the following season, according to some of the most important designers of the world. We also looked at the significance of these colors, because there surely is a reason why a fashion designer chooses a color instead of another.  If you want to read the first part of this article, covering warm colors, click here: Trendy colors for spring 2012. Or, you can simply read on, for the cool colors of the season.

Spring Fashion 2012

Together with yellow, which is the color of the sun, blue is the second most used color in summer: it’s the color of the sea, it’s suggestive of calmness, relaxation and vacation. When people are asked about their favorite color, they often respond with “blue” – it’s trustworthy, constant, dependable. It’s a cooling and calming color in general, but the darker, electric hues may have a dynamic and even dramatic effect on the person seeing it.

While we have seen light shades of blue on the runway for spring-summer 2012, the focus is on the dynamic shade of blue: bright, electric. We found the most intense, dramatic shade at Alberta Ferretti, on a midi satin dress. The fitted dress from Carven is also quite spectacular, with its very decent cut, but very bold color. Less wild tones of blue were spotted at Alexander Wang and Acne, the latter having opted for a denim shade of blue.

Green dresses and prints

The next color on the runway might also be associated with the sea at times – green – but it’s more often associated with the earth itself: forest, grass, plants in general. It’s actually the second favorite color of most people, after blue. It’s a refreshing color, it’s soothing and relaxing for the body and mind. It’s connected with harmony, clearness of mind and self-control.

On the runway for the upcoming season, we’ve seen khaki, forest green, olive, grass green etc. The color is used  on Burberry Prorsum’s fabulous midi with brown accessories, creating a safari-like combo. Other designers use green in prints – Diane von Furstenberg pairs it with blue and white, Carolina Herrera with white and yellow – which has a really refreshing effect on the viewer. An unexpected use of green at Alberta Ferreti, as green is rarely associated with sex appeal, and this dress is all about sexy.

Purple apparel

Purple is a color that can take the best of its components: the calm of blue and the excitement of red. The color is often seen as royal, mystical even, it’s considered eccentric and seems to appeal teenage girls most. The color is said to be uplifting and creative, spiritual and calming. However, the lilac hue that we took note of on the runway, is far more romantic than the basic shade of purple. Being a pastel, it’s often considered feminine and pure.

For the spring-summer season of 2012, designers seem to have fallen for lilac, in all prints and shapes. The 3.1.Phillip Lim collection has purple as its main color, in various shades – we liked the lilac pants with turquoise sandals and a cream blazer – modern and casual. Givenchy opted for a shade very close to pink, so a very feminine one, but balanced the look by creating a pant-suit and a button-up shirt, all of which are masculine. Jil Sander chose the cutest retro vibe in this plaid lilac deux-pièces (midi pencil skirt and fitted blazer), worn with a simple hat and light blue accessories (pure candy!). In the spectacular collection of Louis Vuitton, lilac made an appearance in the cute romper with a diamond-print top.

metallic colors clothes

Last, but not least, metallic colors were spotted on the runway: gold and silver. They both relate directly to the adjacent precious metals. Gold is closer to yellow, so it’s solar and ultimately precious, while silver is closely related to gray, which makes it very versatile in wear, but also a hint more serious.

We spotted an all-gold look at Alexander McQueen, sophisticated and pretentious, in the brand’s typical manner, and we found gold worn with black and white at Balenciaga – unexpected, but hot. Giorgio Armani couldn’t say no to some sparkle, and silver was a perfect pick for the strapless dresses. A shade of antiquated gold was worn with black at Gucci – elegant and classy.
