The sunglasses of the season: Fall Winter 2011 – 2012
It’s no secret that sunglasses are not exclusively made for summer. And not just for fashion purposes, either – they’re actually highly recommended in the cold season as well, as they can protect your eyes against the harmful UV rays that exist all year round, and from the light reflected in the snow. Accordingly, fall-winter collections as well as spring-summer ones always feature a number of sunglasses.
The cool thing about designer sunglasses is that they are probably the most affordable pieces from a collection: you can get them under $100 most times – and that’s something, if owning a designer piece is one of your dreams. Moreover, the fact that they’re designer made, means that they’re high quality – well crafted, out of the best materials out there. And, of course, very stylish!
Let’s see what some of the most famous designers displayed on the catwalk in terms of sunglasses, for the Fall – Winter 2011 – 2012 season.

Moschino opted for the classic cat eye shape and the classic color black – a combination that is unlikely to ever go wrong. Medium sized, these Moschino sunglasses are very versatile: wear them with a spectacular dress for a special occasion, as in the last picture, or wear them with your fashionable ensembles for everyday. For the fashion show, Moschino paired them with large hoop earrings and simple hairdos – a combination that you, too, can try without worry.

Marni went for bold colors: blue, forest green, mustard. The sunglasses that Marni designed are either square shaped (first two pics) or butterfly shaped (last two pics), with gradient or dark lenses, full rim and oversized. You can surely make a statement with such sunglasses, and you can add the touch of color that any winter outfit needs to shine.

Jean Paul Gaultier opted for a rather sophisticated style. His sunglasses are black, brown and reddish, and they come in various shapes, like oval and rectangular. They’re all plastic, full rim, with gradient lenses that mark the eyes in the most beautiful way. Worn with a classy beehive hairdo and with retro inspired clothing, the sunglasses have that mysterious air that the old Hollywood film stars used to have.

Dolce&Gabbana is, as always, on the funky side: diamond shaped sunglasses that remind us of The Joker, black and white printed frames that are matched with black and white outfits etc. Black is the only color used for sunglasses, but they’re styled in a variety of ways. Worn with the omnipresent star print, these Dolce&Gabbana sunglasses are a true statement.

Diane von Furstenberg knows how to make a statement: using oversized to the max. Her sunglasses are huge, but they don’t look “crazy” – they’re actually wearable. The round shape is dominant, in different prints, with or without a chain that prevents you from loosing the shades. There was also a pair of square shaped sunglasses on the catwalk, in a shade of blue gray that matched the respective outfit.

At Burberry Prorsum, all shades are tortoiseshell – a classic print, reinterpreted in modern shapes. For women, the Burberry sunglasses are round/oval shaped, whereas for men, they have a sort of a modified teardrop shape that is not flattering for all face shapes. However, the chosen color matches any skin tone and hair color.

Alexander Wang is as edgy as we know him – he took the classic aviator shape, wrapped it in different color of plastic, and even added fur on the arms – the sunglasses have thus became ear warmers, too! The sunglasses are oversized, and we’ve spotted them on the runway in black, transparent honey and transparent gray. However good looking on the runway, these shades are unlikely to make it in real life, i.e., on the streets.

Finally, 3.1 Phillip Lim went for a bold shape: the square sunglasses. These are particularly flattering for round shaped faces, but don’t do much for everyone else. The colors picked by 3.1 Philip Lim are black, with brown lenses, blue and brown with blue lenses, black with blue lenses and khaki with light brown lenses. With their hair up and covered in layers of clothing, the models look sleek and cool in the 3.1 Phillip Lim sunglasses.
Besides the sunglasses from the runway, there are several other styles that each brand sells – so look on their websites for wearable – and hopefully, affordable – sunglasses.
