Summer dress up fashion Gets A WHITE of Way

Bright in White: The color choice of Summer’s A-list sirens! 2010′s MET Costume Institute Gala lit up a gorgeous Monday night in NYC.  A museum’s worth of Hollywood’s most glamorous faces headlined the party known as the “Oscars of Fashion” in perfectly-fitting whites, proving that a fashion shade thought of as “tricky” can look like a true work of art.

Even super-confident fashionistas will often shy away from white fashions.  Why?  Light-as-a-cloud hues come across looking awkward in styles that are restricting, contain too much stretch or simply are worn with the wrong shades of underwear (even whites!)  Here’s how to make a wardrobe of white your best look yet:

Fitted bodice with flare

Too-tight designs lead to fabric looking “stressed”, even on very slender frames.  Choose a lengthy fitted bodice with a flowing bottom (as seen on Kirsten Dunst, left, designed by Rodarte for Gap).

The Kendra Sleeveless Shirt (right) features a pleated front and corsetlike bodice for a flawless fit.  GUESS by Marciano, $108.

Avoid all that shimmer from glowing satin or white silk.  Fabrics like these shine a spotlight bumps and curves by reflecting large amounts of light. Look toned (and toned down) with a designs in muted white, as seen on Diane Kruger (right).  Velvet’s matte jersey Zaylie Dress (left) features a non-skimpy neckline, plus a rouched front that gives the illusion of a flawless figure.  $124, Shopbop.com
