Spring 2012 trends, straight from the runway!
We have an exciting new year ahead of us, and an exciting new fashion season! Every major designer in business has worked hard to bring on the spring-summer collection, and we really love their results! The collections for 2012 are spectacular: they’re fun and flirty, like the warm season is, they’re sophisticated and glamorous, like their target audience. We picked some of the prominent trends we noticed to show you today.

First off, we’ve got the wrap around dresses and skirts. You’re lucky if you have a large bust and a small bottom – you can wear this style with no worries! It will attract attention to the cleavage, and your silhouette will look balanced. However, if you’re pear shaped, you should stay away from this style – it won’t flatter you.
On the runway, we’ve seen Bottega Veneta’s dark blue dress, perfect for a vacation, we’d say, and we were intrigued by the Jean Paul Gaultier ensemble, with a hood and a nose/ear ring. For the city, we recommend an elegant skirt like the one by Burberry Prorsum, paired with a simple cardigan and heels. A look that can fit both the city and a resort was designed by Michael Kors, who presented a army and safari inspired line.

Not quite as elegant as the wrap-around, but very comfortable to wear, is the wide trouser. This season, they don’t hit the ground, but stop at the ankle or even over the knee. Such pants look great on tall women, and shorter ones shouldn’t wear them without heels!
Acne seems to be inspired by MC Hammer in cut and color, while Alexander Wang went for a utilitarian look reminiscent of the late 90s-early 2000s. Celine opted for a comfortable but elegant look, and finally, Carolina Herrera created a sporty-elegant melange.

Next off, we’ve got lots of ruffles. Each designer used them to their liking: romantic at Chanel, futuristic at Marc Jacobs, bohemian at Missoni and elegant and Zac Posen. Which one is your favorite style?

Retro inspiration never ceased to be displayed on the runway. Designers felt inspired by different decades, but all to wonderful results. Dior and Burberry went for a fitted top and wide skirt cut on their pieces, while Dolce&Gabbana appears to be inspired by the classic Chanel suit, and Gucci modernized the flapper dress of the 1920s.

Another retro accent that we’ve noticed is the peplum: that ruffle at the waist of a skirt, which creates volume and looks great on apple-shaped bodies. Alexander McQueen used it with elegance and sex appeal, Calvin Klein made it look sensual, Kenzo made it seem urban, and Marc by Marc Jacobs had a playful take on the peplum trend.

A fun emerging style is office-glam: a combination of preppy, uptight details (blazers, button up shirts, trousers) and fun, casual ones (bright colors, prints). We loved Derek Lim’s wearable-at-the-office looks, but also the things that make the other looks featured here cool: a shirt unbuttoned at the chest (Diane von Furstenberg), an all fuchsia and pink deux-pièces (DKNY), a combination of blue, red, olive and orange (Fendi).

Lingerie inspired pieces are still a hit! Whether the designers are actually showing lingerie pieces (McQueen, Dolce&Gabbana, Pucci) or just suggesting them (the Givenchy dress suggestive of a garter), they surely know how to play with sex-appeal! We liked the romantic lace insertions, as well as the classic range of colors: black, white and nude.

Another hot trend for the spring-summer season are the very short, high waisted shorts. They come in many combinations and styles, but they surely are perfect for the season – plus, they make your legs seem longer! Balenciaga made an elegant ensemble with shorts by using precious fabrics, while Balmain went for extra-sexy with lace and a corset. Carven keeps it preppy and cute with a blazer and jeweled button-up shirt, and Louis Vuitton creates interesting contrasts with the underwear-like shorts and a turtleneck sweater.

Last, but not least, there are lots of funky prints on the runway this season. Besides the usual florals, stripes and such, you will find fruit print (Dolce&Gabbana, Oscar de la Renta), car print (Prada) or abstract prints in bright colors (Roberto Cavalli, Vera Wang). These make for a joyful and sweet spring-summer season for sure!
