Sensors: Nokia Locate Sensor will help you to find the keys… or whatever thing

Many, many years ago (maybe twenty years ago), some keychains that allowed people to find the keys were in fashion. We had to clap and, if the keys were close enough, a whistle was sounded in order to help us to find the keys, which get lost often. Now, Nokia has decided to take this concept to the next level with an accessory introduced during the CES 2009 in Las Vegas. This accessory is now known as “Nokia Locate Sensor”.

Basically, Nokia Locate Sensor works in the same way that those keyrings that beep when you clap. But in this case, we have a sort of sensor (the green one in the picture) and a software application for our mobile phone. The sensor is a little bigger than a SD card memory and you can put it on your keys, wallet or whatever you want. The application will help you to find the object, provided you’re within 100 meters of it. Besides that, the application will show you how far it is from you. You can also configure it to make the mobile phone able to send an alert when you are moving away from the object with the sensor (maybe you forgot it) or, on the contrary, you can carry the sensor with you and configure it to turn off the mobile when you are far enough away from your phone.

Contrary to other devices, the Nokia Locate Sensor does not require GPS, reducing battery consumption (probably it works using GPRS or Wi-Fi). The sensor includes its own battery which  has enough power to last 18 months before it needs a recharge.

We think it is a great idea: it can be very useful, but, regrettably, it is all conceptual right now and Nokia has not announced a date for a European and US launch. Let’s cross our fingers.
