How often does it happen that you look into a full closet and think you have nothing to wear? It happens to me all the time! I’d like to wear a certain dress, but it goes only with one pair of shoes that I don’t feel like putting on today. And then there’s this cardie that only goes with those tights that I just broke. Everyday routine. And then there’s that one piece that goes with everything, that you can wear anywhere and that makes you look so good!

One such classic piece would be the little black dress – everyone knows how versatile and chic that is. To give it an edge, we chose a little navy dress, that allows for even more interpretations and styles. The chosen dress is available at Topshop for $76, and it comes with a cute thin brown belt, that you can take off on occasion. Its simple, tee-shirt-like appearance makes it comfortable and casual, but you can change it as much as you want using the right accessories. The length, right above the knee, and the shape make it flattering to many types of silhouettes. Let’s see some ideas on how to style such a dress.

Looks / clothing

Because navy and brown complement each other so nicely, we thought you could try this combo when you go shopping or something like that. Put a shirt over the dress, and tie it up in a knot at the waist – it will look casual, but cool. The loafers from Topshop are excellent with their thick, comfortable heels and cute fringe details. Wear them with over the knee socks to keep you warm. Accessorise everything with a funky scarf and go have your fun!

Bright colors style

Because bright colors will still be with us in fall, why don’t we make up an outfit that stands up from the crowd? Pick a brightly colored trench coat, like the one from Halstone Heritage, to put on over your navy dress. Because the dress is so simple, you can choose to wear printed tights, like these floral beauties from General Pants. Wedges are mandatory for your comfort and good looks, so the lace up booties from Lori’s Shoes are perfect in this outfit. Throw on some colorful plastic bangles and enjoy your day out!

Fashion for vacations

Taking a late vacation? Looking for something to remind of this summer? Try out this nautical-style look! A draped, striped cardigan, like that from Jules B. will look amazing over the navy dress. You can’t miss out on brogues, and a red tip is all you need to look very pretty. The hat will protect you from the cold and the Asos bag will add even more color to your cute look.

Formal apparel for fall

Now how about something less casual? You can wear this look at an office party, by simply taking off the blazer. Or you can wear it on a date with someone you like! Blue and yellow look awesome together, and you can experiment with different shades of each: mustard bow shoes from Topshop and a lemon clutch from Jane Normal are the best accessories for a simple, navy dress. The blazer we chose is nude, from H&M, and it goes with the simple headband we found over at Witchery.

Autumn 2011 fashion

Let’s finish with something edgy that you could wear this fall – a look inspired by rock chicks. Of course, you should start with a leather jacket – brown is the best color if you don’t want to look like a motorcyclist, or feel free to pick one in a bright color. Hiking boots are still in, so try something like the ones from Dolce Vita. An oversized handbag will help you out through the day – see Armani Exchange for an example. And to make this look even edgier, pick a statement necklace to fill out the neckline of the simple dress.

There are so many other styles to wear this one dress! All you have to do is use your imagination and try to remix every item as much as possible. Don’t worry if you can’t afford buying all this new stuff – use what you already have in your wardrobe! Combine different colors, create layers, accessorise and use everything that you already have.
