Loewe: homage to the Spanish Baroque style

9 Mar 2009

Twelve months have been enough for Stuart Vevers, Creative Director at Loewe, the Spanish luxury clothing and accessories brand owned by the French luxury goods conglomerate LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy). Now, he has demonstrated a new era has begun for the Spanish company since he works there. Before he arrived in Madrid (January 2008), many people already thought he had the Midas touch  for bags and accessories market because he could transform any accessories or bags line into a successful line. Anyway, last week the British designer surprised us by presenting a collection for women at the Paris Fashion Week (prêt-à-porter). This collection is based on the most exquisite functional luxury that serves as a homage to the Spanish Baroque style.

The dressmaker, who this time didn’t show his designs on mannequins (so far, Loewe used to do it this way), presented his next winter’s collection for women in a fashion show that was carried out at the Universite Paris Descartes. According to the designer, the presentation was very exclusive and  attended by a small group of people in order to allow them to observe closely the beauty of the craftwork and some details of the whole collection.

Originally Stuart Vevers is an expert in leather design. Usually, his creations have an exquisite sense  of beauty and elegance. He is a favorite designer of some celebrities like Sienna Miller and Kate Moss, among others. Vevers recognizes that a bag is the first accessory that comes to his mind when he wants to create a specific look and, according to him,  there are some bags that are the real protagonists in a collection, so, in that case, many clothing items become accessories to complement them. There is a “legend” that says the Loewe’s creative director tests his designed bags before finishing a collection by wearing them in public and observing the reactions of others.

Legends apart, last week, he introduced a wide range of leather garments on a catwalk in France. Those garments can be worn at night or during the day and have straight lines that are technologically designed to highlight the texture of the clothes. Some designs were adorned with fox fur and ornaments made of shiny satin that was also used to conceptualize the femininity of the skirts and dresses. This collection reminds us of the Spanish Baroque style and although dark colors like black and brown are present in the whole collection, the garments are illuminated by other colors (including fire-orange, electric blue and gold) in a subtle way. Vevers said he was inspired by Italian director Antonioni’s “Red Desert,” a tale of provincial alienation in an industrializing Italy.
