World Fashion: NZ – Collections from New Zealand

10 Jun 2011

In parts of the world, the spring-summer collections for 2012 have already been launched in the past months. This is due to the time and climate difference – and we’re talking here about Australia and New Zealand, which are in the Southern hemisphere. Their spring starts in September and lasts until November and then it’s summer from December through February. And because we all need some refreshing new clothes, since we’re in the middle of summer, we thought we’d have a look at what the New Zealand designers have in mind for the warm season.  We’ve picked four designers to present today: Juliette Hogan, Lonely Hearts, Madame Hawke and Ingrid Starnes. Overall, their styles are romantic and vintage inspired, breezy and easy to wear.

Juliette Hogan has had her own label since 2004, with a combination of retro femininity and contemporary fashion. The tailoring of the line is minimalistic and practical, while the fabrics and patterns are carefully chosen, flowy and wonderfully-textured.

The dresses and skirts are knee length or even over the knee length, and they go fluidly around the body. We love the combos with heeled loafers, especially those incredible mustard ones that create such a cool contrast! The color palette includes mostly neutrals like ivory, navy and brown. Such details as the bow-ties or the thin belts make us love this designer even more! You can shop her products in Auckland and other parts of New Zealand, but also online at Precious Peg.

The next brand we picked is Lonely Hearts. Their style reminds us of the 90s, with sweet dresses and rompers, but the model of the lookbook “Alone” is edgy-looking, with platinum blond hair and light make-up. The colors are mostly very light: beige, white, and white with a hint of blue or green. You can see some leather here and there, and lace-up shorts or tops, which have a slight cowboy feel.

The length at Lonely Hearts is mini, and it includes short shorts, dresses and skirts. These are carefully combined with loose, cropped tops and visible pieces of lingerie. It’s no wonder, since Lonely Hearts has a line of cute and sexy lingerie as well. Unfortunately, they currently only have stores in New Zealand, Australia and Japan, so if you’re crazy about their pieces you’re gonna have to fly to one of those countries for some shopping!

In the same romantic style, only this time with more color, is the collection of Madame Hawke. Still a little 90s inspired, like the designers presented above, Madame Hawke has simple pieces, mostly in full colors. There are occasional prints, like the discreet pale flowers, and some lace pieces that increase the romantic factor.

For day, we recommend the mini dresses, with thin belts at the waist. But there’s also the jeans + plain shirt combo! Or the lace blouse with shorts.  For a more special occasion, how about that lilac maxi? It makes a cool transition from day to evening, as you can wear it for so many occasions, depending on how you choose to accessorise. Also, take note of their simple jackets, with minimum details for maximum effect – the gray, oversized one, for instance. And just so you know, you can buy these adorable clothes online.

We’re ending the article with a fabulous collection that comes from another New Zealand designer: Ingrid Starnes. This is a collection seriously inspired by vintage clothing, as you can find a mixture of influences from various decades. Some pieces are inspired by lingerie, with see-through fabric and bra-like tops. Others are elegant and classy. For day, the wrap-around dresses are excellent, and those striped details at the neckline are amazing. The lengths are variable, but you won’t see any minis.

Ingrid Starnes

2012 clothing

Vintage meets modern in the Ingrid Starnes collection for spring-summer 2012. They have strong tones like pink and burgundy, as well as neutrals like navy and white. The occasional prints are small and delicate, romantic and very wearable. The red lipstick on the model is a great touch in combination with the simple color palette.

We hope you enjoyed having a look at fashion from other parts of the world! New Zealand, although not an incredibly large country, amazed us with their wonderful sense of style.
