Celebrities in ad campaigns, fall 2011

9 Sep 2011

When a brand borrows the face of a celebrity to represent a certain product, the popularity of that product raises instantly. Along with the popularity rate of the celebrity. So, the hipper a face, the more products it will sell. Such campaigns are beneficial for both sides: the actress or singer gets higher visibility, as well as a nice cheque; the brand is more exposed due to the familiar face.

If during the 90s, such supermodels as Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington were celebrities without doing anything else but modeling, things have changed a bit since then. Although a revival of the model has happened with some of the newer faces (think Sasha Pivovarova, Laura Stone or Chanel Iman, for example), Hollywood celebrities still dominate the magazine covers and are a large part of the ad campaigns. While some designers choose unknown, fresh faces to be associated with their products, other would rather try the good-old-movie-actress-trick.

One of the actresses that books one fashion campaign after another is Scarlett Johansson. After glorious parts in Lost in Translation, Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Prestige, The Nanny Diaries or Vicky Christina Barcelona, Scarlet has dedicated part of her time to singing and modeling. At 27, Scarlet has an album (“23rd best album of 2008″ ), a long-term collaboration with clothing line Mango and now an ad for Dolce & Gabbana.

Scarlet is the face of the latest beauty ads of Dolce & Gabbana, the fall line. She’s looking hot in black and white lingerie, Dolce & Gabbana make up and laying on the bed sheets. The luxurious pictures have been shot by Solve Sundsbo, who’s known for taking excellent beauty pictures (Chanel’s current campaign, for example).

Another young actress is showing off her looks in an ad campaign: Natalie Portman, for Diorskin Forever, the latest make-up collection from the Dior fashion house. With various parts in movies like Leon, Star Wars, Closer, V for Vendetta, The Darjeeling Limited or the Oscar-winning Black Swan, Natalie has always shown exquisite fashion sense and has been acclaimed by the critics as very well dressed.

 Natalie Portman

Natalie’s first ad campaign for a fashion brand was Miss Dior Cherie, the fragrance. Dior said about her that is the “symbol of perfection”, but the mutual sympathy didn’t last for long. When designer John Galliano made some anti-semitic remarks at the end of last year, Portman, who is Jewish, stated that she no longer wants to be associated with this brand. However, after Galliano’s dismiss from the fashion house, things seem to be good with Natalie and Dior. She is now the face of the new beauty line.

Another celebrity that Dior hired, this time for the fall handbags line Miss Dior, is Marion Cotillard. The gorgeous brunette played some parts to remember in such films as Love me if you dare, Taxi, La vie en rose and Inception, and won the first Oscar ever awarded to a French language performance.

The ad campaign features a very sexy-looking Marion, in tweed outerwear and luxurious small handbags. The photographer Mikael Jansson is well known for his celebrity pictures, as well for doing spreads in all the major fashion magazines. Marion was also featured in the Lady Dior Handbags campaign for spring-summer 2011.

Next on the list is Anne Hathaway, another gorgeous young actress who’s taken the fashion world by surprise. After so many fairy-like parts, like in The Princess Diaries, Ella Enchanted, Becoming Jane, Alice in Wonderland and the famous The Devil Wears Prada, Anne was featured in her first fashion ad campaign in 2008, for Lancome’s fragrance Magnifique.

Three years later, she gets a contract with Tod’s Signature Handbags for the Fall-Winter collection. Although we’re used to seeing Anne Hathaway with a big smile on her face, in the ad campaign she looks really sexy. The bright red lips and nails are the perfect match for the red car used as prop. The handbags are gorgeously displayed and emphasized. The Italian brand’s handbags were shot together with Anne by the famous Mert & Marcus, who also shot Lara Stone for Tom Ford, the Versace Eyewear campaign, the Giorgio Armani fall 2011 campaign and many others; they are the photographers of the moment, we could say. Nothing but the best for adored actresses!
