Brazilian Fashion: New Proposals for the Season
Some weeks ago, emerging designers showed their collections for the Spring / Summer 2012 season at the Capital Fashion Week in Brasilia.
Brazilian Fashion? What is the first thing that comes on your mind when you think about that? Ok, maybe you think about “sexy” clothes, right? or thongs? or bikinis? or just casual jeans modeled by pretty girls? Ok, maybe you are not totally wrong, but that could be only a small fraction of Brazilian fashion.
Actually, in this post, we are going to show you the current and future trends directly from Brasilia, the capital city of Brazil, where a total of 16 local emergent designers showed their Spring / Summer 2012 collections.
And here we’ve selected the 5 most remarkable (in our opinion) designers from those Brazilian runways.
Romildo Nascimento: More than clothes

Romildo says that his Spring / Summer 2012 collection has his DNA. In this collection, he designed clothes for both men and women. For men, he used cotton and natural fabrics… and for women he worked with handcrafting techniques in order to create several clothing pieces. His designs are for men who are daring enough to be willing to wear pink items and unconventional styles… and the feminine items always have a very prominent touch of glamour.
Camila Prado: Tropical Glamour
When she was planning her collection, Camila thought about designing for modern and independet women who work in a big city. However, she also included a touch of glamour for evening clothes by adding attractive elements. Her clothing pieces can be described like a 1970s-style adaptation with a tropical touch, abundant hair, gaudy colors, and elegant make-up.
Eliana Murargy: From Africa to Brasil
Eliana Murargy is a young designer who already has her own fashion line called Murade, which is the name of her father, Mozambique’s Ambassador to Brasil. Before showing her designs on runways, she was very nervous and anxious.
“This is the first time that I have used very different colors in a collection. I am really nervous because usually I just use black as main color”. This time, she used silk and satin to make her dresses. And, according to her, the collection represents the African Massai community mixed with the style of the modern and urban women.
Summer Shop: Brazilian Beach Clothing
If you have heard that Brazilian girls like to wear thongs at the beach, you’re right! It’s not only a stereotype but statistically accurate.
With regard to this, one of the designers of Summer Shop -a Brazilian beach clothing shop- says: “We can know immediately what girl is a Brazilian girl and who are foreign tourists. While many women around the world prefer a more covered style, Brazilian girls wear those…” and she pointed to a sexy yellow bikini.
The Summer Shop collection is comprised by beautiful pareos, swimsuits with designs that use several colors (color blocking) and sheer tops.
Sakina M’sa: Elegant but natural

One of the most interesting designers at the last edition of the Capital Fashion Week in Brasil was Sakina M’sa. Certainly, we think that she is destined to be one of the most renowned designers. Maybe she is not very famous in some places of the world, but she’s now a very important designer in France and her name is synonymous of good taste and great creations in the fashion industry. In fact, some weeks ago she launched an interesting fashion accessory for Puma: The Puma Grip Bag (see a video here). This item was part of a campaign against exclusion, headed by the luxury group PPR in collaboration with Sakina and Puma.
Designer Sakina (born in Comoros Islands) says that she used blue in her collection as a homage to a social group: le bleu col du travail, which is the hard-working class. “We have to smile and give thanks. In my collection, blue color means optimism”, said Sakina, who travelled to Brasilia from Paris. For the Spring / Summer 2012 season, her designs also have other colors like pale pink, white, and black with sequins. Besides that, on the runways, models had their hair with a style that resembles to the Audrey Hepburn’s hairstyle: Very feminine, classic, and with red lips.
“My feminine concept is elegant. I think women as thinking spiritual people. Many women had changed the world and, for that reason, we have to pay tribute to women”.
