Alexa Chung for Madewell
Alexa Chung started her modeling career at the age of 16, when she was discovered by an agent from Storm Model Management. She had campaigns for Fanta, Sony Ericsson and Urban Outfitters and has been in some music videos. She gave up modeling after four years and entered the world of television and journalism, as of 2006. Five years later, Alexa is on all the best-dressed lists, with her preppy-hipster style that cannot be copied, and sometimes works as a designer. Mulberry named a bag after her (the Alexa), she’s been described as “the Kate Moss of the new generation” by The New York Times and Anna Wintour called her “a phenomenon”.
After recently breaking up with her long-term boyfriend Alex Turner, vocal of Arctic Monkeys, Alexa has focused on her professional life and her great passion: fashion. She’s collaborated with Madewell before, and this September they launched a new line together: Alexa Chung for Madewell, fall-winter 2011-2012.
If last year’s collection focused on tea-dresses and vintage inspiration, this year it is more about comfort, versatility and items that don’t go out of style. The Alexa Chung for Madewell collection is something that Alexa herself would wear, as well as something that anyone could wear. The pieces are basic, they work together well and will probably look good with what you already have in your closet.
The collection was inspired by the 90s and 70s and it features light apparel that can be nicely layered for the cold season. The color palette is not varied, but rather simple: black and white, tones of brown, nude, camel, and just a few pops of red. Speaking of red, that loose-fit pleated red dress has just enough of a retro feel to keep the party going. Same goes for the other pretty dresses in the collection – the fitted white lace, the white polka dot dress with pleats at the bottom half, the black and white floral shirt-dress or the mod dress with a white slimming stripe down the middle. You can’t ignore the prints: besides polka dots and flowers, Alexa Chung was also fond of black and white gingham, very charming and girly, or those palm trees that have sold out already!
Moving on to the “tops” section, Alexa likes to bring different things together: fabrics, styles and shapes are mixed in this line. On one hand, we’ve got feminine cuts and precious fabrics like lace and silk, in romantic prints like flowers and polka dots. However, some of these are combined with masculine features, like the angular collar. On the other hand, we have these casual tees and long sleeves, with simple prints like stripes or graphics. Layer them with knitted jumpers, cardigans or soft sweaters.
Regarding bottoms, Alexa’s collection includes a leather mini skirt and a midi “grandma skirt”, along with several styles or pants and shorts. The 70s style is highly visible through the wide leg jeans with a high-waist. We also like the skinny pants in a shade of “dusty blossom”, as well as the similarly colored shorts. Note that Alexa is all about high waist this season, whether it’s trousers, shorts or skirts.
Alexa herself is a fan of pretty outerwear, so jackets and coats couldn’t have been missing from the Madewell line. The suede pixie jacket is especially suited for those with an edgy style, and can be worn with contrasting lace and biker boots. The coats can be seen as elegant – we love the British style plaid coat just as much as the tailored wool coat with leather inserts. These coats make excellent layers over the pretty dresses and the cozy knitwear presented above – but they can just as well be integrated into your wardrobe.
There are also some accessories in this collection, which will brighten up your fall-winter season. For example, you can spice things up with a red knitted hat and/or a matching scarf – warm meets cool! Another option is the oversized tartan scarf, that will truly keep you warm if you wrap it around your neck and shoulders. The gray ankle boots inspired by David Bowie are a seasonal must-have, as you can wear them with jeans, skirts, dresses, shorts or anything else. And if you’re traveling, check out that cute pouch with Alexa’s doodles printed – it can carry your beauty essentials and it matches one of the Madewell tees (see “tops” section above).
